To promote the internationalization of Southern Taiwan's research achievements and expand opportunities for cross-border technology collaboration and commercialization, Professor San-Yi Huang, Executive Director of the Southern Taiwan Industry-Government-Academia Collaboration Platform (STG) at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), recently led STG Project Manager Kuo-Cheng Hung and Hsin-Yu Lin, Deputy Director of the Office of International Relations and Accreditation, College of Management, on a visit to Singapore. During the visit, the delegation met with the Taipei Representative Office in Singapore, Singapore Polytechnic (SP), Singapore Management University (SMU), IAAS, and educational technology company Koobits. Discussions focused on smart aquaculture, circular economy, smart healthcare, semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), and educational technology, with the aim of expanding international collaboration and market opportunities.
Professor Huang stated that STG's core mission is to integrate the research capabilities of universities and colleges in Southern Taiwan while promoting technology transfer and industry-academia collaboration. Through this visit, STG hopes to strengthen partnerships with Singapore's government, academia, and industry, while learning from its well-established innovation, entrepreneurship, and commercialization ecosystem to further enhance the industrial application and global competitiveness of Southern Taiwan's research outcomes.
The delegation first visited the International Association for Agricultural Sustainability (IAAS), where the two sides signed an MOU for cooperation. The matchmaking of technologies of interest to IAAS, is discussed with potential collaboration extending to smart aquaculture, agricultural waste recycling, renewable energy, and field validation in Southeast Asia. The delegation subsequently visited the Taipei Representative Office in Singapore, where they met with Deputy Representative Wen-Ling Wu and Representative Dr. Tung Chen-Yuan. The discussions covered smart healthcare, silicon photonics, AI security, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), and advanced packaging semiconductor technologies. The Representative Office shared insights into Singapore's innovation ecosystem and industry trends and expressed its willingness to facilitate future connections between local enterprises, research institutions, and STG, helping Southern Taiwan's research achievements enter the Singaporean market, and achieving practical outcomes through extensive international industry-government-academia collaboration..
In addition, the delegation met with educational technology company Koobits to explore AI-powered education for English learning in schools. The company holds more than half of the market share in Singapore’s online language learning platform industry, with its presence extending to Southeast Asian markets such as Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam , etc. The delegation then visited Singapore Polytechnic (SP), touring its School of Engineering, cleanroom facilities, biomedical engineering laboratories, urban agriculture center, and aviation training facilities. The visit provided valuable insights into SP's industry-oriented talent cultivation model. STG introduced its research achievements in smart aquaculture, agricultural waste recycling and circular utilization, and silicon photonics. SP expressed strong interest in STG's smart aquaculture and circular economy technologies, and both parties looked forward to facilitating future collaboration between research teams, including joint research projects and technology validation in real-world application settings.
The delegation visited the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IIE) at Singapore Management University (SMU) to exchange experiences on technology transfer, innovation and entrepreneurship, and the commercialization of research outcomes. Discussions included SMU's Innovation Partner for Impact (IPI), Knowledge Transfer Centre (KTC), and the Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition, which provide valuable references for STG in strengthening its international innovation and commercialization network.
The visit successfully strengthened relationships with Singaporean partners and identified several research technologies with strong international commercialization potential. Moving forward, STG will continue to connect domestic and international partners from government, academia, industry, and research institutions to promote technology matchmaking, talent exchange, and field validation, ultimately building a globally competitive platform for research collaboration and technology commercialization.
