﹤Biotech & Biomed Innovation、AI﹥Device for Analyzing Muscle Functional Characteristics of Sarcopenia using Electromyography (EMG)
I-SHOU University / Prof. Chiang Ching-Fen
Pain Points Solved
This technology addresses the difficulty elderly people face in detecting the risk of frailty. Existing assessment methods (such as DXA, BIA, grip strength) are professional but costly and cumbersome to operate, making them difficult to apply in communities and homes. General testing often relies on manpower and lacks continuous quantification and connection to medical care.
This technology provides a low-cost, easy-to-operate, and long-term tracking frailty assessment solution. It allows the elderly to complete health monitoring in their daily environment, enhancing the efficiency of community care and promoting the integration of early prevention and medical treatment.
Technology Introduction
Utilizing IoT combined with AI, this technology develops a wearable electromyography (EMG) signal acquisition and analysis system. Through EMG feature algorithms, it can objectively and accurately assess the impact of sarcopenia on gait and muscle function. This device is highly convenient and portable, suitable for home testing and long-term monitoring, which aids in the early detection of muscle degradation and improves health management efficiency.

Application Examples
This technology has been used to recruit 71 elderly individuals with varying risks of sarcopenia in communities and hospitals. Through SARC-F questionnaires, muscle function tests, and gait analysis, the results were compared with assessment equipment that has already received Class II medical device certification. The results showed that the accuracy of this device in grading sarcopenia exceeded 80%, verifying its clinical application feasibility and health monitoring value.
