﹤Biotech & Biomed Innovation﹥Development of anti-inflammatory 3D cell culture model

National Pingtung University of Science and Technology /  Assistant Professor Rank Research Fellow, Wei-Wen Sung

 Pain Points Solved

1. Animal Welfare & 3R Spirit: Addresses the global demand for Reduction, Replacement, and Refinement by creating platforms that can replace animal testing.
2. In Vivo Mimicry: Overcomes the limitations of 2D cultures by using organ-on-a-chip technology to simulate a growth environment closer to that in vivo.
3. R&D Efficiency: Provides a standardized procedure for screening anti-inflammatory effects of natural extracts and synthetic compounds.

 Technology Introduction

This project utilizes organ-on-a-chip technology to establish a 3D immune cell culture model. By integrating syringe pumps to create dynamic flow conditions, the platform evaluates the anti-inflammatory or immune-modulating responses of candidate substances, such as carbon dot compounds. The research encompasses cross-disciplinary fields including microfluidics, bioinformatics, and medical device regulations.

 Application Examples

1. Carbon Dot Screening: Several candidate compounds have been identified for inhibiting inflammation in the THP-1 human lymphoma cell line.
2. Platform Services: Provision of pre-cultured organ-on-a-chip systems to industry-academia partners for substance efficacy testing.
